STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A variety of Staten Island groups and community leaders gathered for a midday celebration Nov. 9 to honor U.S. military veterans who reside or work at Harbor Terrace Adult Care and Assisted Living, New Brighton.
“The management of Harbor Terrace Adult Care and Assisted Living, the Pvt. Joseph F. Merrell Jr. American Legion Post No.1368, and the Rotary Club of Staten Island truly recognize and understand the dedication and sacrifice made by our military members and their families,” said Staten Island Rotary Foundation Chairman John J. Amodio, facilitator of the day’s awards ceremony and celebration. “Veterans, such as those who reside or work at Harbor Terrace have accepted and carried the burden of freedom for all of us.”
During the patriotic get-together, veterans were presented with a special certificate, underscoring appreciation for their distinguished service, allegiance to God and country, and courageous efforts in protecting the liberty and independence of their fellow Americans.
In addition, the Staten Island Rotary Foundation (SIRF) and others presented contributions to the American Legion of Richmond County. The funds will be used to sponsor the attendance of veterans’ children atAmerican Legion Boys’ State summer camp – a week-long program that immerses high school youth (currently completing their junior year) in citizenship and leadership training.
The donations, including $1,000 from SIRF, and others, Amodio said, “were fueled by the support of Frank Scarangello, Executive Committee chairman of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce and member of the Rotary Club of Staten Island; the inspiration of Matthew Scamardella, a member of Pvt. Joseph F. Merrell Jr. American Legion Post No. 1368 and moderator of the award presentations; the leadership of Eric Campione, president of the Rotary Club of Staten Island; the dedication of Linda Baran, president and CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, and the championship of Emanuel Schembari, a non-veteran and past volunteer at the Post who is devoted to supporting the families of those who fought for his freedom.”
