Robin and Joe Labita renovate familiar location,
launch fresh enterprise with partner
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island husband-and-wife team revered for their community service and philanthropic contributions have returned home following a 10-year retirement in warmer climes.
And, in keeping with their entrepreneurial spirits, Joe and Robin Labita are back at work. In addition to beautifully updating their former hair-restoration-and-styling business location – the couple have teamed with a worthy partner: Westerleigh native Brenda Mazza, an award-winning hair-loss/hair-replacement specialist and hairstylist.
Spanning two floors of the Labitas’ commercial property at 1297 Clove Rd., Sunnyside, the newly launched venture consists of two separate complementary businesses. Ultimate Hair Techniques and Ultimate Hair & Retail Center combine to provide a full-service hair care and hair-restoration destination.
“In addition to our experience as business owners and hairstylists, what we took with us upon retirement was our knowledge and expertise of hair replacements,” said Labita, a hair-loss/hair-replacement specialist and hairstylist who describes his latest venture as “Staten Island’s largest hair-loss solutions center.”
HAIR TRANSPLANTS
Long-experienced as a hair-transplant consultant and stylist, Labita has rekindled his affiliation with one of the region’s most admired physicians specializing in hair transplants.
“My job is to work with the doctor to ensure that the client’s transplant results in an individualized style and a look that optimizes the outcome of the procedure,” Labita said. “There’s more than just a medical component to transplants; there is an artistic side, as well.”
The Labitas’ earlier enterprises at the same address, Natu’Ral Hair Techniques and Vincent’s Hair Care, operated from 1977 to 2003. During those years, the couple were known for their generosity within the community and for their passion of contributing, and custom-styling, wigs for cancer patients dealing with hair loss.
“Chemo can be rough. It’s always a special moment to see the face of a person who has gone through so much light up with a smile,” Labita said. “Robin and I have been blessed to help in this way, and we consider it a privilege.”
The couple are eager to renew their former ties to the Staten Island and New York chapters of the American Cancer Society in an effort to assist patients in need.
Labita, a former member and past president of the South Shore Rotary Club, already has begun to attend the organization’s weekly meetings.
“There is no better way of settling back into the community than by mingling with old friends and utilizing Rotary’s charitable paths to help our community and assist worthy causes,” Labita said.
NUMEROUS PRODUCTS, AMENITIES
Replete with a full-service hair salon for men and women, the Labitas’ re-imagined enterprise offers such amenities, products or services as: Shared and private-area styling-and hair-replacement stations for men and women; tastefully discreet state-of-the-art consultation rooms; hair extensions; color restorations; highlights; cuts and blowouts; hair and scalp treatments; scalp restoration, and more.
The venue also stocks a seemingly endless array of the finest-quality wigs available – for medical, fashion or fun purposes – in either human or synthetic hair;
In addition, the shop carries an expansive inventory of top-quality name brand hair-care products, such as Paul Mitchell, Matrix, Brazilian, Nioxin, Redken, Brocato, Sexy Hair, It’s a Ten, Rici, Joico, CHI, Pravana, Purelogy, Fairy Tales, Crew, MoroccanOil, and Image.
HOLISTIC HEALTH
The establishment also features holistic health and dōTERRA product consultant Christine McCue of Westerleigh. Ms. McCue, a registered nurse with experience in disease management, works with clients to maximize their well-being through strategies designed to complement traditional medical therapies.
She uses a variety of products in her work, such as high-grade vitamin and nutritional supplements, medicinal oils, state-of-the art bio-feedback technology, and more. Ms. McCue is available at the salon on Saturdays, or by appointment on weekday evenings.
The Labitas’ return to Staten Island wasn’t part of their original game plan.
“At the time, we expected our move to south Florida to be permanent,” Mrs. Labita said. “By coincidence, we returned to Staten Island on Oct. 1, the 10th anniversary of the very day our retirement began.”
The Labitas said the move back was prompted by the latest recession, which wreaked financial havoc to businesses across the nation, including some of the commercial tenants in the Sunnyside building they had owned for decades.
“Our retirement plan didn’t reflect the possibility of an unstable income from our rentals,” Mrs. Labita said. “So, rather than wait for things to improve, we decided it was in everyone’s best interest, including our remaining tenants and the community, to return and breathe some new life into the property. We have so many friends here. Coming home wasn’t as difficult as some might think.”
