Marina’s Advanced Skincare offers a wide variety of wellness-oriented therapies and programs for adults, children, and even pets
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Marina DiStefano is marking her 30th anniversary as a pioneer of modern-day holistic-health services on Staten Island.
Her practice includes an affordable range of services, such as advanced skincare, featuring the latest state-of-the-art technologies available in the field; holistic therapies; nutritional guidance and permanent hair removal.
A registered nurse (RN) since 1987, Ms. DiStefano’s holistic health-related contributions in the borough began four years before then with the launch of her licensed electrolysis practice in Great Kills.
Now a “medi-spa” known as Marina’s Advanced Skincare, the wellness center expertly provides permanent hair removal and advancedSKINCAR skincare for men, women and teenagers, in addition to offering a wide variety of holistic-health therapies and programs for women, men, children, and even pets.
“My qualifications as a registered nurse helped further my understanding of the holistic approach to health and well-being,” said Ms. DiStefano, who holds the credential of Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). She was among the first in the United States to be board certified as an electrologist by the international American Electrolysis Association (AEA), the largest organization of its kind for permanent hair removal professionals.
Often a cosmetic issue, unwanted hair growth can also be symptomatic of serious underlying medical conditions which can impact health, well-being and even the reproductive health of some women, according to AEA.
Qualified electrologists, however, understand that hair does not suddenly appear without reason.
“It has always been my priority, as it should be with all responsible electrologists, to be educated in the underlying causes of hair growth,” Ms. DiStefano said. “A well-versed hair-removal professional will know if unwanted hair-growth is due to a medical reason that requires the attention of a medical doctor.”
Conditions that initiate unwanted hair growth might include the tweezing and waxing of hairs; physiological changes, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause, or something as ominous as a dysfunction of the body’s endocrine system.
“Hair growth can be caused by any number of factors, such as heredity, medications, or even stress,” said Ms. DiStefano. “This is why it’s important to be sensitive to the possible catalysts of hair growth, and why I’m particularly glad my background includes my combined experience as an RN and board-certified electrologist.”
A permanent solution for unwanted hair growth, electrolysis is only as safe as the skill, training and experience of the person providing the procedure.
“It’s safe in qualified hands, but when performed by an unqualified individual, electrolysis can result in harsh consequences for a patient, resulting in scarring or infection,” Ms. DiStefano said.
In her role as a professional health counselor and electrologist, Ms. DiStefano is certified in all procedures performed at her wellness center, including that of a childbirth educator, teaching private classes to the moms-to-be and their coaches.
“I enjoy teaching privately so the mom and her coach can feel comfortable, as well as relaxed when asking questions,” Ms. DiStefano said. “I incorporate my own experiences as a nurse and mother to foster a better learning experience.”
Ms. DiStefano’s services at the wellness center include a host of holistic therapies, such as reiki healing, Bach Flower Remedies® consultation, crystal healing, foot detox, aromatherapy, stone therapy, and more.
