STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – If you operate a business, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of worker-classification rules.
“The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the IRS are stepping up enforcement of worker classification regulations, and in today’s part-time economy, it may be harder than ever to avoid penalties,” states Karen Hall, a human resources expert at PAYCHEX®.
An upcoming SCORE-Staten Island online seminar – “Independent Contractor or Employee: Do You Know the Difference?” – is designed to give business owners an awareness of the difference between independent contractors and employees, and help them avoid the pitfalls of noncompliance.
The free online workshop – facilitated by Hall and sponsored by Flagstar Bank – will take place Thursday, April 25, 1 to 2 p.m., via Zoom.
During the presentation, Hall will discuss a variety of topics during the workshop, including: The current DOL definitions of independent contractors and employees; employer (business owner) responsibilities as they apply to the diverse types of workers; methods of determining worker classification, and misclassification concerns, consequences and common mistakes.
A question-and-answer session will follow.
