STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Rita Jackson, a certified SCORE-Staten Island business mentor and prolific community volunteer, was recognized as a “Community Hero” at the recent Staten Island Not For Profit (NFP) Association’s Community Service Awards Breakfast.
During the event, held Nov. 17 at LiGreci’s Staaten, West Brighton, a variety of individuals were recognized for their diligent and unselfish work in the community of Staten Island.
Jackson, a Brooklyn native who has resided on the Island for 22 years, had worked in the Human Resources field for over 25 years. Since her retirement, she has continued to use her business acumen and transferable skills as a volunteer and mentor.
Her volunteer efforts have benefited many local causes, and continue to do so.
In addition to her roles as a longtime certified SCORE business mentor and, most recently, as a facilitator at St. Joseph/St. Thomas Church Bereavement Support Group, Jackson has served as: A school reading volunteer with Staten Island Mental Health; a volunteer with the Hospice Care Bereavement Team, Visiting Nurse Service of New York; acting executive director of the Museum of Maritime Navigation & Communication, and as an active participant and advisory board member of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP SERVE), which honored her with the organization’s Individual Community Service Award.
